ABSTRACT
SUMMARY Malaria in Africa is vectored primarily by the Anopheles gambiae complex. Although mechanisms of population persistence during dry season are not yet known, targeting mosquitoes could provide opportunities for vector control. In Sahel, it appears likely that M-form A. survive aestivation (entering a dormant state). To assess role eco-physiological changes associated with survival, we measured body size, flight activity and metabolic rate wild-caught throughout 1 year Sahelian locality, far from permanent water sources, at riparian location adjacent to Niger River. We found significant seasonal variation size both sites, although magnitude was greater Sahel. For activity, seasonality only observed increased wet when compared just prior season. Whole-organism affected numerous biotic abiotic factors, component locations. However, assay temperature accounted completely location, while remained after accounting all variables Interestingly, did find mean lowest either contrary our expectation would conserve energy increase longevity reducing metabolism this time. These results indicate may use besides reduced enable survival
