ABSTRACT
The abundance, distribution and oxidative capacities of mitochondria have been investigated in the red pectoral fin adductor muscles fish (Order Perciformes) that use a predominantly labriform style swimming. Mediterranean Sea species from families Labridae, Serranidae, Sparidae Antarctic Nototheniidae non-Antarctic Channichthyidae were studied. Sub-Antarctic Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, included pelagic haemoglobin-less icefish (Champsocephalus esox) robalo (Eleginops maclovinus), which occurs as far north 35 degrees S. In Champsocephalus esox, mitochondrial volume density muscle was 0.51 cristae surface (43. 9 microm2 microm-3) higher than reported for icefishes. red-blooded, active or semi-pelagic species, within range 0.27-0.33 regardless habitat temperature.
