The potential presence of 5-methylcytosine as a sparse internal modification mRNA was first raised in 1975, and map the also part epitranscriptomics “big bang” 2012. Since then, evidence for its has firmed up, initial insights have been gained into molecular function broader biological relevance when present mRNA. Here, we summarize status quo field, outline some current challenges, suggest how to address them future work.
