ABSTRACT
Background:Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungus that infects the oral cavity. Increases in colony numbers of C. can be caused by multiple factors, such as smoking, a weakened immune system, taking antibiotics and with immune-compromised individuals. Smoking increase virulence factor make it stronger. One factors biofilm forms. The makes more tolerant to extracts seaweed Gracilariaverrucosa, which has antifungal activity. objective study was examine ability G.verrucosa inhibit formation obtained from saliva smoker. Methods: A total six concentrations G. verrucosa (6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 75 100%) were tested this study. positive control fluconazole 0.31 µg/ml taken one smoker Faculty Dentistry, Syiah Kuala University. amount assessed using ELISA reader. data subjected Kruskal-Wallis test at significance limit p<0.05. Results: extract three bio-active compounds: steroids, terpenoid, tannins. results showed inhibitory activity on increases its concentration increases. highest effectiveness recorded 100% 48 h exposure. Conclusions: optimal inhibition after hours
