A molecular phylogeny and classification of the Cynodonteae (Poaceae: Chloridoideae) with four new genera: Orthacanthus, Triplasiella, Tripogonella, and Zaqiqah; three new subtribes: Dactylocteniinae, Orininae, and Zaqiqahinae; and a subgeneric classification of Distichlis

ABSTRACT
Abstract Morphologically, the tribe Cynodonteae is a diverse group of grasses containing about 839 species in 96 genera and 18 subtribes, found primarily Africa, Asia, Australia, Americas. Because classification these has been poorly understood, we conducted phylogenetic analysis on 213 (389 samples) using sequence data from seven plastid regions (rps16‐trnK spacer, rps16 intron, rpoC2, rpl32‐trnL ndhF, ndhA ccsA) nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS 1 & 2) to infer evolutionary relationships refine current classification. The tree combined region well resolved depicting strongly supported monophyletic that includes 17 clades corresponding subtribes Tripogoninae, Pappophorinae, Traginae, Muhlenbergiinae, Hilariinae, Scleropogoninae, Boutelouinae, Monanthochloinae, Dactylocteniinae, Eleusininae, Aeluropodinae, Triodiinae, Orcuttiinae, Zaqiqahinae, Farragininae, Perotidinae, Gouiniinae, two moderately Orininae Hubbardochloinae. places Odyssea paucinervis as sister Neobouteloua Dactylocteniinae whereas ITS it Aeluropus Aeluropodinae. mucronata Cteniinae, Trichoneurinae, Hubbardochloinae, not closely related paucinervis. placed Acrachne racemosa Dactyloctenium while near base Eleusininae. Our new recognizes three (bringing total 21 subtribes): Acrachne, Brachychloa, Dactyloctenium, Neobouteloua; with Cleistogenes Orinus; Zaqiqahinae single genus, Zaqiqah gen. nov.; Hubbardochloinae (resurrected here) genera; describes four genera: Orthacanthus (Traginae) species, Triplasiella (Gouiniinae) Tripogonella (Tripogoninae) species. We additionally provide subgeneric Distichlis recognizing sections: D. sect. Monanthochloe, Bajaenses, Spicatae, latter representing sections. following nine combinations are made: pedunculatus, Tridentopsis buckleyana, mutica var. elongata, eragrotoides, loliiformis, minima, spicata, mucronata. lectotypify five names: Festuca F. mucronata, Triodia eragrostoides, Uralepis elongata.
