Ukrainian Refugees in Germany: Evidence From a Large Representative Survey

ABSTRACT
This study describes the first wave of IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP Survey on Ukrainian Refugees in Germany, a unique panel dataset based over 11,000 interviews conducted between August and October 2022. The aim is to provide data-infrastructure for theory-driven evidence-based research various aspects integration among refugees second most important destination country EU after Poland, hosting million people who arrived Germany shortly Russian invasion Ukraine. Based survey, this also provides insights into demographic, educational, linguistic, occupational, social characteristics population. analyses revealed that refugee population comprised mostly young educated individuals, with significant proportion females without partners female-headed separated families. While German language skills were limited, about half had attended or attending courses. However, process faced challenges, as participation children day-care was relatively low, self-reported life satisfaction markedly below average highlights need targeted policy measures address such issues.
