ABSTRACT
The Parkatêjê Indians, belonging to the Jê group and inhabiting Mãe Maria Reservation in southeast of state Pará Amazon Region Brazil, have suffered rapid intensive cultural changes recent years. This survey was designed characterize metabolic profile frequency cardiovascular risk factors this community. Ninety subjects (90.0% adult population without admixture) were investigated. Anthropometric measurements performed following clinical characteristics measured: glycemia, serum insulin proinsulin (fasting 2-hr post 75 g glucose load), ß-cell function (%B) sensitivity (%S) estimated by HOMA, HbA1c, GAD65 antibody, lipids, uric acid, creatinine, leptin, blood pressure. Information about alcohol use, smoking, medical history obtained through individual interviews. prevalences were: overweight, 67.8%; obesity, 14.4%; central 72.2%; hypertension, 4.4%; dyslipidemia, 44.4%; hyperuricemia, 5.6%; antibody positivity, 25.6%; chronic 0.0%. One case impaired tolerance (1.1%) one fasting glycemia diagnosed during study diabetes previously. diabetic woman excluded from analyses involving insulin, proinsulin, %B, %S. All creatinine values normal. Blood pressure did not correlate with age, anthropometric measurements, natural logarithm (ln) transformed After adjustment for age sex, there positive correlations between total cholesterol body mass index (BMI; r = 0.24), triglycerides BMI (r 0.44), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR; 0.52), ln leptin 0.41), WHR 0.29), acid systolic 0.34), 0.22). Systolic 0.04; 0.70) diastolic 0.14; p 0.18) BMI. Ln had a weak correlation 0.14) adjusted multiple linear regression model containing variables BMI, concentrations explained 77.2% variation leptin. In conclusion, high rates found among these Indians point being high-risk develop diseases. To reduce they need receive preventive interventions.
