ABSTRACT
This article demonstrates that the Cultural Revolution led to a temporary decline in educational homogamy urban China, which was reversed when ended. Previous studies on China have paid incomplete attention China's shifting institutional structures. research applies theory trend of China. During (1966–76) state policies lowered legitimacy, homogeneity and mating opportunities school marriage market while enhancing them before after. From perspective I hypothesize strength during weaker than use log-multiplicative layer effect models analyze data representative residents 20 cities. find moderate but significant evidence for hypotheses. Educational assortative is subject political intervention
