ABSTRACT
The Kerr effect in atomic vapor may be regarded as the power saturation of susceptibility. Hence saturable is intimately tied to standard effect. Here, we calculate without free parameters using a two-level system and find good agreement with experimental results. Our approach permits direct comparison theory experiment an extrapolation low required by previous approaches. An experimentally observed asymmetry between red blue detuning led us consider model one ground state three excited states. Such cannot described two-state model. predicts about 25% asymmetry.
