Economic burden of varicella in Bangkok, Thailand: A multicenter medical chart review study

ABSTRACT
Our multicenter, medical chart review, cost-of-illness study used a micro-costing approach to evaluate the economic burden associated with varicella in Bangkok, Thailand, from societal perspective. We reviewed charts of adults and children primary diagnosis (2014-2018) 4 hospitals Bangkok. Reported healthcare resource utilization missed school or workdays were extracted charts. Mean direct, indirect, total costs per patient estimated for overall, adult, pediatric patients (2020 USD). Of 200 60 adults, 99.6%, 5.4%, 5.4% had varicella-related outpatient visit, emergency department hospitalization, respectively. The mean direct cost was 33 USD adult patients. visits (8 vs 13 USD, P<0.001) medications (7 9 significantly lower among Forty-eight reported 5.8 days lost, 32 7.4 lost. 89 higher than (145 72 P<0.001). Indirect accounted 63% (54% 77% patients). There is substantial seeking including considerable indirect costs.
