ABSTRACT
Background The Ice krill, Euphausia crystallorophias is one of the species at base Southern Ocean food chain. Given their significant contribution to biomass Ocean, it vitally important gain a better understanding physiology and, in particular, anticipate responses climate change effects warming seas around Antarctica. Methodology/Principal Findings Illumina sequencing was used produce transcriptome ice krill. Analysis assembled contigs via two different methods, produced 36 new pre-pro-peptides, coding for 61 neuropeptides or peptide hormones belonging following families: Allatostatins (A, B et C), Bursicon (α and β), Crustacean Hyperglycemic Hormones (CHH MIH/VIHs), Cardioactive Peptide (CCAP), Corazonin, Diuretic (DH), Eclosion Hormone (EH), Neuroparsin, Neuropeptide F (NPF), small (sNPF), Pigment Dispersing (PDH), Red Concentrating (RPCH) finally Tachykinin. LC/MS/MS proteomics also carried out on eyestalk extracts, which are major site neuropeptide synthesis decapod crustaceans. Results confirmed presence six precursor-related peptides previously identified analyses. Conclusions This study represents first comprehensive analysis Eucarida non-decapod Malacostraca, several described time crustacean. Additionally, there potential expansion PDH family members, may reflect certain life history traits such as circadian rhythms associated with diurnal migrations confirmation mass spectrometry novel unknown function. Knowledge these essential provides vital framework physiological response this key valuable resource studies into molecular phylogeny organisms evolution hormones.
