ABSTRACT
Arterial stiffness, as measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV), is an independent predictor of cardiovascular events and mortality. stiffness increases with age. However, modifiable risk factors such smoking, BP salt intake also impact on PWV. The finding may lead to the identification treatable factors, and, thus, interest practicing nephrologist. We have now studied prevalence correlates arterial assessed PWV, in 191 patients from nephrology outpatient clinics order identify for that future guide therapeutic decision-making. PWV was above normal levels age 85/191 (44.5%) patients. Multivariate analysis showed advanced age, systolic BP, diabetes mellitus, serum uric acid calcium polystyrene sulfonate therapy or calcium-containing medication were predictors A new parameter, Delta upper limit (Delta PWV) defined decrease weight values. calculated (measured - (upper age-adjusted values general population). Mean±SD 0.76±1.60 m/sec. In multivariate analysis, blood pressure, active smoking remained higher delta while urinary potassium beta blocker lower conclusion, frequent outpatients. Systolic acid, medications, metabolism non-use blockers are associated increased Nephrology
