Deceased Organ Donation Registration and Familial Consent among Chinese and South Asians in Ontario, Canada

ABSTRACT
Objective For various reasons, people of Chinese (China, Hong Kong or Taiwan) and South Asian (Indian subcontinent) ancestry (the two largest ethnic minority groups in Ontario, Canada) may be less likely to register for deceased organ donation than the general public, their families consent at time death. Methods We conducted population-based studies: (1) a cross-sectional study donor registration as May 2013, (2) cohort steps proceeding with patients who died hospital from October 2008 December 2012. Results A total 49 938 559 714 individuals (8.9%) 47 774 374 291 Asians (12.8%) were registered donation, proportions lower public (2 676 260 10 548 249 (25.4%). Among 168 703 Ontarians hospital, 33 81 (40.1%; 95% CI: 30.7%-51.6%) 39 72 (54.2%; 42.7-65.2%) consented (68.3%; 66.4%-70.0%). Conclusions In Canada are compared remaining public.
