ABSTRACT
Heartwood and sapwood of Quercus faginea were evaluated in relation to summative chemical composition non-polar polar extracts composition, including an assessment antioxidant properties (DPPH FRAP). Twenty trees from two sites Portugal analysed. had approximately times more solvent extractible compounds than (on average 19.0% 9.5%). The lipophilic below 1%, most them e.g. ethanol-soluble corresponded 65% total extractives heartwood 43% sapwood. Lignin content was similar (28.1% 28.6% extractive-free wood respectively) as well the sugar composition. Site did not influence both included mainly saturated fatty acids (23.0% 36.9% aromatic also abundant (22.9%). ethanol-water extractibles a high phenolic substances (558.0 319.4 mg GAE/g extract, respectively sapwood). polyphenolic with higher ellagitannins (168.9 153.5 tannic acid/g extract very low condensed tannins. activity IC50 2.6 μg/ml 3.3 for respectively, compared standard antioxidants (IC50 3.8 Trolox). ferric reducing ability 2.8 2.0 mMol Trolox equivalents/g respectively. variability between no differences found. Q. showed good potential cooperage other applications which source is desirable.
