Two decades of little change: An analysis of U.S. medical school basic science faculty by sex, race/ethnicity, and academic rank

ABSTRACT
To examine changes in U.S. medical school basic science faculty over the last 20 years (1998–2018), we undertook an observational study utilizing data from American Association of Medical Colleges Faculty Roster. Rank (Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate and Professor), sex (Female), race/ethnicity (Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic, Latino, Spanish Origin, Multiple Race-Hispanic, White) were analyzed; this reflected a population 14,047 (1998) to 18,601 (2018) faculty. Summary percent various gender, origin categories analyzed across using regression models. We found that females (24.47% 35.32%) underrepresented at all timepoints minority identified as (1.57% 1.99%), Race-Hispanic (3.03% 4.44%), Asian (10.90% 20.41%). The largest time points was White Male Professors (30.53% 20.85%), followed by (15.67% 9.34%), (13.22% 9.75%). Small statistically significant increases observed among female multiple ranks who Race-Hispanic. then completed secondary analyses looking interaction Gender. found: (1) increase (p<0.0001) both genders identify although males had higher rate (6 point difference, p<0.0001); (2) for (P<0.01) not males; (3) approximately 1% increase; (4) White, decrease while demonstrated (p<0.0001).
