ABSTRACT
A growing portion of scientists realises the need to not only alert about climate change, but also change their professional practices. range tools have emerged promote more sustainable activities, yet many struggle go beyond simple awareness-raising create concrete transition actions. Here we propose a game-based support system MaTerre180’ , which has been designed build scenarios greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions in academic community. After providing common scientific background context (global warming issue, its causes and consequences) setting up challenge (50% reduction carbon budget by 2030), participants belonging community governance bodies immerse themselves into fictional characters, simulate behaviour real research groups. The game deployed during year 2021, with six hundred from nine countries 50 cities. Results explore clear pathways for GHG between 25 60%, median 46%. alternatives allowing greatest are video communication (36%), followed mutualization activities voluntary cancellation or reduction, that represent 22 14% respectively. remaining 28% consists transport alternative, relocation extended duration some travels, etc. In addition, analyses pointed out importance guided negotiation phase bring such as relocation, local partners computing optimization. An added value this is information it collects (anonymously) will be used answer pressing questions science environmental psychology regarding use serious games promoting changes attitudes behaviours towards sustainability, including broader on how network structures influence “climate behaviour”, knowledge commons. Modestly, offers an innovative It simply question moving tokens virtual gameboard playful adjustment practices, rather brainstorming possible desirable ways remodelling teaching communities embracing new paradigm. tens workshops, our results show reaching 50% stress negotiations carbonized activities. This first attempt reinforces belief engagement at heart international development agenda key approach tear down institutional barriers inhibit transformation needed achieve society.
