ABSTRACT
Background: Syphilis rates are of public health concern in Canada, with multiple jurisdictions reporting outbreaks over the past five years. The objective this article is to describe trends infectious and congenital syphilis Canada 2011–2020. Methods: Routine surveillance conducted through Canadian Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (CNDSS). In response rising syphilis, all provinces territories (P/Ts) have also submitted enhanced data on Public Health Agency Outbreak Investigation Coordinating Committee (SOICC) starting 2018. Descriptive analyses CNDSS SOICC 2011–2020 by age, sex, pregnancy status, male sexual orientation P/Ts were performed. Results: national rate increased from 5.1 per 100,000 population 2011 24.7 2020.The almost P/Ts, Prairie greatest relative increases 2016 2020 (more than 400%). Rates males consistently higher females 10 years; however, 2020, among 773%, compared 73% males. Although proportion cases who self-identify as gay, bisexual other men sex decreased 54% 38% between 2018 they still represent a high (according eight P/Ts).
