ABSTRACT
Abstract Seaweeds have been utilized as food, fodder, fertilizer, and medicine since ancient times; nevertheless, they received only a little attention. In the current work, we extracted sulfated polysaccharide from marine source investigated its anti-arthritic potential in vivo . The isolated freeze-dried was tested for acute oral toxicity based on OECD 423. This step followed by investigations clinical signs gross pathological alterations seen. A complete Freund’s adjuvant-induced arthritis used to test activity female Sprague–Dawley rats, which were divided into five groups: (1) normal control, (2) arthritic (3) methotrexate treatment (0.1 mg/kg), (4) crude (CSP) (5 (5) CSP (10 mg/kg). brown algae Sargassum ilicifolium Gulf of Mannar. body weight, paw volume, biochemical markers (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate creatinine, urea, C-reactive protein levels) also measured each group coupled with histopathological immunohistochemistry studies. investigation indicated that lethal dose 50% (LD 50 ) more than 2,000 mg/kg. addition, animals mg/kg, p.o.) groups had substantial reduction volume compared other groups. Methotrexate dramatically decreased levels marker enzymes. Histopathology revealed low-dose significantly reduced severity synovitis, panniculitis, liver necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, cortical paracortical necrotic foci node, high p.o.). Immunohistochemical studies mg/kg) inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokines such tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-2, CD4 cells. Overall, it can be concluded is an efficient agent confers effects via cytokine pathway.
