ABSTRACT
A national survey conducted in 1995-96 showed that mild to moderate iodine deficiency existed Macedonia (median urinary [UI] concentration 117 microg/l). It was concluded a new legal regulation should be introduced concerning the iodination of table salt for human consumption. The level recommended 20-30 mg/kg salt, exclusively form more stable potassium iodate. regulations were instituted and became effective October, 1999. National surveys performed 2000 2001 increased median UI concentrations (154.1 microg/l 164.5 2001). In 2001, excretion assessed 490 pregnant lactating women 140 During last three surveys, household specimens content. findings an increase percentage optimal content (42-69%), which correlated with higher IU results. regime proved highly correcting Macedonia.
