ABSTRACT
The expression of the ERα and ERβ estrogen receptors in hippocampus may be important etiology age-related cognitive decline. To examine role regulating transcription learning, ovariectomized wild-type (WT) knockout (KO) mice were used. Hippocampal gene young ERαKO was similar to WT 6 h after a single estradiol treatment. In middle-age mice, hormone deprivation associated with decrease select genes blood-brain barrier; cyclic treatment increased these improved learning mice. contrast ERβKO exhibited basal hippocampal profile treated and, absence treatment, preserved on water maze. memory performance could reversed by lentiviral delivery hippocampus. These results suggest that one function is regulate ERα-mediated This model supported our observations under conditions low allowed transcription. As levels ERα, we observed other mechanisms, likely including ERβ, regulated maintained hippocampal-dependent memory. Thus, indicate interact involved maintaining during aging.
