“Trying to make healthy choices”: the challenges of the food reintroduction phase of the NHS Low Calorie Diet Programme pilot for type 2 diabetes

ABSTRACT
Background: The food reintroduction phase of the NHS Low Calorie Diet (LCD) programme aims to support service users reintroduce gradually back into their diet. Understanding experiences from a broad and diverse range is critical in helping improve delivery commissioning equity care. Methods: This was co-produced qualitative study underpinned by realist informed approach, using interviews photovoice techniques. Service (n=43) LCD Programme were recruited three models across 21 pilot sites England. Data analysed thematic approach. Results: introduction required control planning that challenged behaviours participants. Around third participants continued use Total Replacement products, or considered doing so, for convenience maintain calorie control. coach–service user relationship important understanding session content translation behaviour change. Physical activity increased during this phase, which contributed positive health outcomes. Conclusions: paper reports insights programme. Key messages include need frequency tailored culturally representative education.
