ABSTRACT
Objective: This study formed part of the 1998 South African Demographic and Health Survey, which included questions assessing extent alcohol use, risky drinking problems among Africans to obtain up-to-date baseline estimates consumption inform intervention efforts. Method: A two-stage random sample 13,826 persons ages 15 or older (59% women) was in survey. Alcohol use assessed through eight questions, including CAGE questionnaire. Frequency analyses for different age groups, geographic setting, education level, population group gender were calculated, as odds ratios these variables relation symptoms problems. Results: Current reported by 45% men 17% women. White (71%) most likely Asian women (9%) least be current drinkers. Urban residents more than nonurban dwellers report drinking. One third drinkers over weekends, 28% 10% scored above cutoff level on Symptoms significantly associated with lower socioeconomic status, no school being 25 years age. Conclusions: comprehensive strategy is required address high levels
