ABSTRACT
Abstract The maize Ac/Ds transposon family was the first transposable element system identified and characterized by Barbara McClintock. transposons belong to hAT of class II DNA transposons. We others have shown that elements can undergo a process alternative transposition in which transposase acts on termini two separate, nearby Because these are present different elements, generate variety genome alterations such as inversions, duplications, deletions, translocations. Moreover, transpose preferentially into genic regions, suggesting structural changes arising from may potentially chimeric genes at rearrangement breakpoints. Here we 11 independent cases gene fusion induced Ac transposition. In each case, functional created linked, paralogous genes; moreover, event associated with duplication ∼70-kb segment located between paralogs. An extant B73 contains an internal apparently generated also identified. Our study demonstrates transposition-induced duplications be source for spontaneous creation diverse structures novel maize.
