ABSTRACT
To compare the efficacy of a local anesthetic cream and music distraction in reducing or preventing pain from needle puncture (intravenous cannulation) children. A secondary aim was to examine influence age on report behavior therapeutic outcome.Children aged 4 16 years (N = 180) who were undergo surgery under general anesthesia via intravenous cannulation randomly allocated one three interventions. The comparison lidocaine-prilocaine emulsion (EMLA, Astra) placebo double-blind. Stratification by group (4 6, 7 11, 12 16) ensured an equal number children (20) each intervention/age category. global assessment behavioral reaction procedure made principal investigator, taking into account vocal, verbal, facial, motor responses. child asked assess severity Faces Pain Scale (FPS) visual analogue toy (VAT). scales applied conservatively as ordinal scales: FPS 0 6; VAT 10.Children received reported less (mean score 1.42) compared with 2.58) 2.62). There highly significant effect (P < .001) self-report scores. Younger children, regardless intervention, significantly more than older scores: 2.85, 2.33, 1.43 for groups respectively; P .001). superiority maximal youngest 6) almost eliminating pain-related behavior, multiple regression analysis confirmed treatment effects revealed interaction between age. Although trend favoring active evident (7 differences not significant. scores influenced type (gauge) cannula, but this did affect conclusion regarding effects. no sex, experience venipuncture, whether anxious arrival operating room. The results show that is effective venipunctures young most need prevention.
