ABSTRACT
In 2016, an estimated 1.5 million females aged 15-24 years were living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Eastern and Southern Africa, where the prevalence of HIV among adolescent girls young women (3.4%) is more than double that for males same age range (1.6%) (1). Progress was assessed toward Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 2020 targets sub-Saharan Africa (90% those aware their status, 90% HIV-infected persons status antiretroviral treatment [ART], virally suppressed [HIV viral load <1,000 RNA copies/mL]) (2) using data from recent Population-based Impact Assessment (PHIA) surveys seven countries. The national years, percentage who aware, had achieved suppression calculated. target all 73% (the product x 90%). Among countries, 3.6%; this group, 46.3% reported being HIV-positive 45.0% suppressed. Sustained efforts by public health programs to diagnose as early possible ensure rapid initiation ART should help achieve epidemic control women.
