Family Anesthesia Experience: Improving Social Support of Residents Through Education of Their Family and Friends

ABSTRACT
The prevalence of burnout among anesthesiology residents is 41%-51%. Burnout associated with medical errors, physician turnover, and substance use disorder. Social support wellness may reduce burnout, but a barrier persons' lack understanding an anesthesiologist's work demands. We developed the Family Anesthesia Experience (FAX) to help persons best their resident.FAX consisted 4-hour event hands-on experience, didactics portion, panel discussion. Participants learned about typical day in life resident, wellness, disorder, available resources, had experience procedures. discussion offered logistical information residency allowed ask members questions. A postevent survey collected feedback on event.Fifty-one participants (first-year persons) attended event. Eight 11 (73%) 32 40 (80%) completed survey. All enjoyed event, would recommend it other resident persons, felt improve communication support. Most moderate (35%) large amount (50%) from Qualitative suggested most found helpful improving residents' demands.The FAX was well liked by participants. Although we did not assess specific knowledge gained long-term effects 2022 evaluations previous years' events suggest that improved participants' stressors.
