ABSTRACT
The Black Curassow (Crax alector) is a large game bird with Vulnerable conservation status found in north-central South America. We examined its distributional pattern across French Guiana using number of environmental descriptors at 3 scales analysis: landscape, forest type, and microhabitat. used hierarchical model temporary emigration imperfect detection for data collected by standard distance sampling methods 35 study sites. At the landscape scale, density decreased hunting pressure increased steeper slopes both hunted unhunted areas. Topography appeared to be good proxy ecological requirements probably reflected habitat quality. population was negatively correlated abundance palms Mimosoideae positively Lauraceae. Botanical families did not directly influence distribution, but rather determined spatial patterns being markers particular type. microhabitat Curassows hilltops more frequently than other parts local topographical gradient. Our multiscale analysis shows that this species' distribution can explained biotic or abiotic conditions, regardless scale. For conservation, we recommend maintaining connectivity between populations separated predicted densities could adapt quotas Guiana's forests. show combining field remote sensing helps understand processes responsible relationships.
