ABSTRACT
The presence and fate of contaminants emerging concern (CECs) in wastewater have received growing attention due to their potential impacts on human health the environment. In this study, authors assessed CECs influent effluent Sharjah treatment plant (SWWTP), a conventional activated sludge system, over 1 year period. is capital city Emirate UAE. Characterisation required development elaborate analytical techniques for detection quantification at nanogram per litre level. A total 57 were detected identified, which ten pharmaceuticals, including seven antibiotics, an analgesic/antipyretic medicine, β-blocker antipsychotic drug quantified. measured concentrations quantified pharmaceuticals tens hundreds nanograms litre, except acetaminophen, reached micrograms levels. 4–69% levels influent, indicating apparent removals range 31–97%. This study first one removal SWWTP contributes essential literature subject region.
