ABSTRACT
Understanding the dynamics of agrobiodiversity is essential to development conservation and valorisation strategies. The rice varietal diversity in Vakinankaratra region Madagascar was assessed through individual group surveys, as well collection characterization samples cultivated varieties on 1,050 farms located 32 villages. Average numbers used per village (10.9) farm (2.2) are comparable with other traditional agrosystems, though large regional variability observed. main determinants this were: altitude, farming systems, cropping systems economic wealth. High disparity frequency use observed, a number "minor" by less than 10% farmers. Local seed management characterized lack selection for purity, but rather well-filled grains. adoption new practices variety management, associated recent upland region, shows farmers' willingness innovate. Prospects situ discussed.
