After 8.8 Maule megathrust 27 February 2010, we observed large‐scale postseismic deformation, which resulted strain rate increase 15% Illapel. observation agrees with our modeling viscous relaxation after earthquake. where upper‐plate GPS velocity increased coincides very slip distribution inverted from measurements coseismic displacement. mainshock started small‐amplitude nucleation phase lasted 20 s. Backprojection seismograms recorded North confirms extent rupture, determined local observations, indicates strong directivity deeper shallower rupture areas. displacement shows an elliptical 200 km×100 km localized zone is 31.3° S. consistent uplift some sites inferred field observations bleached coralline algae coastal area. Most aftershocks relocated study were interplate events, although events 50 occurred inside Nazca plate tension (slab‐pull) mechanisms. majority located outside 5 m contour line mainshock.
