ABSTRACT
Background and purpose - Burning mouth syndrome is a chronic persistent painful condition characterized by burning sensation in the oral mucosa. We investigated etiological factors of patients presented with history who admitted our outpatient clinics over 8-years period had no underlying identifiable local factors. also tried to determine their demographic clinical characteristics. Our aim was investigate association between psychiatric disorders such as depression anxiety, diseases like diabetes mellitus (DM) other laboratory studies complaining solely mouth. Methods The study included clinic 2005 2012. They were evaluated neurologist, psychiatrist, an internist, dentist. Complete blood counts, biochemical analysis cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed for all patients. Results A total 26 (22 (84%) females, 4 (15%) males; mean age 55.9 years) enrolled this study. Five (19.2%) depression, 2 (7.7%) anxiety disorder, mellitus, 8 (30%) B12 vitamin deficiency, 3 (11.5%) decreased ferritin levels blood, 1 (3.8%) folic acid deficiency. Cranial MRI normal. Nine (34.6%) causes. Conclusion multidisciplinary approach management establishment common criteria diagnosis would provide insight into pathophysiological mechanism.
