ABSTRACT
Abstract DESYRE (DEcision Support sYstem for the REqualification of contaminated sites) is a GIS‐based decision support system (DSS) specifically developed to address integrated management and remediation megasites (i.e., large areas or impacted characterized by multiple site owners stakeholders). In conceptual design development main aspects pertaining process—analysis social economic benefits constrains, characterization, risk assessment, selection best available technologies, creation sets technologies be applied, analysis residual risk, comparison different scenarios—were included. The DSS software composed 6 interconnected modules. characterization module, chemical hydrogeological data are organized in relational database contaminants' distributions mapped using geostatistic tools. socioeconomic module addresses constraints though fuzzy logic select land use. assessment divided into 2 phases. preremediation phase, an original procedure allows assessing representing spatial distribution risks posed contaminants soil groundwater, providing risk‐based zoning site. Then, technology suitable sets, taking account both technical requirements site‐specific features, performed experts supported multicriteria postremediation simulation applied provides maps with related uncertainty maps. Finally, alternative scenarios described set indices can compared ranked interested stakeholders methodologies. paper highlights procedural steps functionalities analyzes its points strength potentialities, as well limits.
