ABSTRACT
Three pigeons were trained to discriminate between two line orientations ( S 1 and 2 ). A left‐key peck was correct when presented, a right key‐peck presented. In all procedures, responses occasionally reinforced with food paired the presentation of magazine light. Incorrect produced blackout. Six detection procedures used. first, signal ratio varied across conditions reinforcer allowed covary. second, held constant at 1:1 conditions. third, 1:1. these three that not scheduled for reinforcement followed by The remaining repeated those described above one procedural change: Nonreinforced but trials Birds showed systematic preferences key associated stimulus presented or most often. There no change in birds' performance over changes feedback nonreinforced responses.
