Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults: Position of Portuguese Experts on Diagnosis and Treatment

ABSTRACT
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental that often persists into adulthood, affecting approximately 1.5% - 3% of the adult population in Portugal. Untreated ADHD adults associated with increased risks substance abuse, criminality, poor academic and professional performance. Less than 20% are properly diagnosed treated due to overlapping symptoms other psychopathological comorbidities, lack awareness, prejudice surrounding this disorder. This position paper results from expert meetings involving six Portuguese experts managing ADHD. It aims guide diagnostic treatment strategies, as well address main barriers limitations these patients within context, specifically regarding diagnosis treatment. Furthermore, it seeks clarify demystify misconceptions, increase medical promote discussion for development guidelines improve diagnosis, treatment, quality life
