ABSTRACT
Zinc, an essential trace mineral, plays a crucial role in over 300 enzymes that are vital for major metabolic pathways. Zinc deficiency can cause various symptoms and sometimes lead to serious conditions, especially after surgery. Therefore, recognising the prevalence predictors of zinc before surgery is preventing associated symptoms. Although linked several diseases, its association with orthopaedic disorders remains unclear. This retrospective study aimed explore inpatients prior case-control investigate inpatients. Patients admitted Department Orthopaedic Surgery at Teikyo University Chiba Medical Center between 15 February 2022 31 August were included. The design categorised patients into (case) non-deficiency (control) groups based on serum concentrations (< 60 µg/dL). data retrieved from centre’s database included demographics, comorbidities, reasons hospitalisation, fracture details, medication use, laboratory values. Statistical tests Fisher’s exact test categorical variables two-sample t-test continuous vari-ables. To identify factors deficiency, multivariate analysis ( backward stepwise regression model) was performed items significantly different univariate analysis. A total 156 this study. Forty-seven (30.1%) had deficiency. rate higher case group than control (68.1 % vs. 33.9 %; p < 0.001); spinal disease less common (2.1 31.2 OA (8.5 22.9 = 0.04). signif-icantly rates fragility hip pelvic fractures did group. Spinal Laboratory findings revealed lower mean (46.2 µg/dL) (76.3 µg/dL), accompanied by albumin haemoglobin concentrations. Hypoalbuminemia anaemia more prevalent Multivariate logistic identified age ≥ 60, anaemia, fracture, hypoalbuminaemia as independent predictive while decreased risk. 30.1% concen-trations.
