ABSTRACT
Abstract: The increasing rate of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) in the United States will lead to more cases periprosthetic infection (PJI), including those caused by Streptococcus viridans (S. viridans) group organisms, which are relatively rare culprits infection. S. organisms divided into five subfamilies based on specific criteria. Since primary source each subfamily is oral cavity, role antibiotic prophylaxis prior invasive dental procedures has been debated best suit interest patient. Diagnostic criteria have recently standardized for all responsible PJI. Treatment regimens determined maximal susceptibility identified. collective information presented PJI this review paper help prepare orthopaedic surgeons preventing and treating these difficult infections.
