ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVES: Mammography rates reported by women in the National Health Interview Surveys of 1990 and 1987 are examined. Why this screening modality is not more frequently used explored. METHODS. Data from Surveys, conducted Center for Statistics, cross-tabulated compared. RESULTS. In 1987, approximately 17% over 40 years age having had a mammogram previous year. 1990, rate doubled. Race declined importance; income education remained strong, positive predictors screening. CONCLUSIONS. Despite dramatic increase, two thirds mammograms. Use was higher primarily because did realize that mammography tests breast cancer asymptomatic women. Primary care physicians main source health mammography. The data suggest public programs to promote should especially target primary with low incomes education. Likewise, providers ensure their patients referred facilities deliver high-quality at cost make procedure accessible.
