ABSTRACT
Background: The long-term outcomes of a proximal humeral fracture during adolescence are not well known. We investigated the course primary treatment for these injuries and in adulthood, comparing with those from age-matched controls. also compared after operative nonoperative via propensity score matching. Methods: included children who sustained between ages 10.0 16.0 years underwent 1995 2005. Data episodes were extracted patient files. patients invited to follow-up visit outcome assessment radiographs or telephone interview if unable attend. was Disabilities Arm, Shoulder Hand (DASH) questionnaire. secondary Simple Test (SST), pain at rest strenuous use, shoulder range motion, strength measurements, health-related quality life (15D), harms. Participant results normal values an population. effect assessed using matching average calculated. Results: This study 209 (210 fractures). mean (and standard deviation) 13.1 ± 3.2 years. Outcome data obtained 152 participants (153 fractures); 78 attended visit. uneventful. scores 2.5 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.8 3.3 [range, 0 13]) DASH 11.7 CI, 11.5 11.8 8 12]) SST. Other similarly good. There no differences function population values. Propensity showed treatment. Conclusions: Proximal fractures adolescents heal rarely result impairments whether treated operatively nonoperatively. Level Evidence: Prognostic III .
