ABSTRACT
Abstract Background Since animals frequently encounter a variety of harmful fungi in nature, their ability to develop sophisticated anti-fungal strategies allows them flourish across the globe. Extensive studies have highlighted significant involvement indigenous microbial communities human health. However, daunting diversity mammalian microbiota and host genetic complexity are major obstacles our understanding these intricate links between components, immune genotype, disease phenotype. In this study, we sought bacterium-fungus-Drosophilamodel systematically evaluate effects commensal bacteria. Results We isolated pathogenic fungal strain, Diaporthe FY, which was detrimental survival development Drosophilaupon infection. Using Drosophilaas model system, Drosophila-associatedLactobacillus plantarumfunctioned as probiotic, protected flies from mortality induced by FY. Our results show that L. plantarumhindered growth FY vitro, decreased rate FY-infected vivo, consequently mitigating toxicity hosts. Additionally, presence plantarumoverrode avoidance oviposition on FY-associated substrates. Conclusions identified potential Drosophila pathogen. Commensal plantarummitigated susceptibility Drosophilato fungi, providing insight into natural interplay contribute animal health pathogenesis. Keywords plantarum, infection, Drosophila, antagonist, oviposition.
