The experiences of a nonclinical set of adolescents and young adults living with persistent pain: a qualitative metasynthesis

ABSTRACT
Abstract Background Around 15–30% of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) suffer from persistent or chronic pain. Strategies to manage pain in different populations have been well described; however, is an increasing problem among AYAs, the use over-the-counter medications increasing. The aim this study was identify synthesize evidence qualitative primary studies on how AYAs a nonclinical population experience living with pain.Method A metasynthesis guided by Sandelowski Barroso’s guidelines used included studies. electronic databases Medline, Embase, Cinahl, Psycinfo, Mednar, ProQuest were searched for published English Nordic languages January 2005 April 2019. Inclusion criteria aged 13–18 19–24 first-hand persistent, recurrent, episodic any body site. Pain associated medical diagnosis, malignant diseases, procedures testing, sport activities excluded.Results Of 2254 screened records, nine including 184 participants (127 female 57 male 11–28 years) analyzed into metasummaries metasynthesis. In five studies, headache focused condition, while three did not specify type All conducted Western cultural context. revealed that participants’ experiences characterized themes: 1) juggling everyday life; 2) exploring sources information pain; 3) striving find relief.Conclusion These experienced need juggle dealing life explored various sources.
