ABSTRACT
Abstract Background: African weakly electric fish generate organ discharges (EODs) for orientation and communication. In the mormyrid genus Campylomormyrus, waveform duration of are species-specific elongated pulses (> 4ms) a derived trait. Pulse is presumed to depend on electrocyte geometry/excitability or hormonal signaling.Tissue-specific transcriptome analyses across species with different pulse durations have revealed differential expression genes related excitability. There also point mutations in ion channel which relate duration. However, comprehensive assessment expressed Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) throughout entire transcriptomes fish, potential identify further influencing EOD duration, still lacking. This particular value, as discharge likely based multiple cellular mechanisms various genes. Here, we want non-synonymous SNPs Campylomormyrus differing by Results: We identified 27 candidate inferred positive selection among at least one substitution specific tshokwe, EODs. Inferred had mainly functions linked transcriptional regulation, cell proliferation, differentiation apoptosis. Further, GO terms 2 KEGG categories ('Transcription' 'Cancer: Specific types') C. tshokwe (derived EOD) significantly more frequently exhibited than compressirostris (ancestral short EOD). Conclusion: performed first transcriptome-wide SNP analysis (genus Campylomormyrus) provide putative potentially involved determination an tshokwe. Most likely, regulation well apoptosis take part durations. The processes growth density pivotal tissue morphogenesis might determine shape organs. supports observed correlation between geometry/tissue structure putatively valuable resource future investigations this peculiar trait, may focus their functional implications.
