ABSTRACT
Background: Neonatal septicemia is defined as a clinical syndrome characterized by systemic signs and symptoms caused bacterial infection gives positive blood culture in the first month of life. It associated with high morbidity mortality, but early diagnosis treatment significantly improve outcomes. The present study brings out quick cost- effective Hematological Scoring System that enables neonatal sepsis
Method: This was conducted Department Pathology Sree Gokulam Medical College Research Foundation, Venjaramoodu, Thiruvananthapuram over 1 year. Eighty neonates suspicion sepsis were studied respect to their peripheral smear findings, C-reactive protein levels.
Result: Among eighty cases, twelve positive. Male gender late- onset significant risk parameters. Escherichia coli Staphylococcus aureus most common isolated organisms. Of different parameters I:T ratio Absolute neutrophil count showed highest specificity immature had sensitivity. Forty-one percent score. score > 5 92%
Conclusion: cost-effective, rapid easy perform screening test can be used rule thus avoiding unnecessary administration antibiotics unaffected babies. should adopted routine procedure minimally qualified rural doctors minimal resources ensure appropriate action immediately for children index sepsis.
