ABSTRACT
Starch has great potential to replace petroleum-based plastics in food packaging applications. However, starch films often exhibit poor mechanical and barrier properties, are vulnerable moisture bacterial contamination. By incorporating eggshell powders as fillers, this study improved the tensile strength Young’s modulus of films; reduced transparency increased their UV screening performance by 60%; enhanced water vapor oxygen properties with transmission rate decreased from 388 122 g/m2/d 360 88 g/m2/d, respectively. The porous particles could further enable a bioactive polyphenol (EGCG) be introduced into films, thus improving films' antimicrobial activity. This suggests that fillers offer sustainable means functional starch-based which may increase application materials industry.
