ABSTRACT
Purpose: To evaluate demographic, clinical, and laboratory variables, their associations with in-hospital mortality, among elderly internal medicine patients nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding. Patients Methods: Demographic, data were collected retrospectively for 129 aged ≥ 80 years who initiated NGT feeding during hospitalization in wards. The compared between survivors non-survivors. Multivariate logistic regressions performed to identify the variables most significantly associated mortality. Results: mortality rate was 60.5%. Compared survivors, non-survivors more often presented pressure sores ( P =0.005) lymphopenia < 0.001), treated invasive mechanical ventilation less underwent geriatric assessment 0.001). Non-survivors demonstrated higher mean levels of C-reactive protein, lower values serum cholesterol, triglycerides, total albumin 0.001 all comparisons). On multivariate analysis, following entire cohort: presence (odds ratio [OR], 4.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.68– 11.48; =0.003) (OR, 4.09; CI, 1.51– 11.08; =0.006), cholesterol 0.98; 0.96– 0.99; =0.003). Conclusion: Among acutely ill hospitalization, extremely high. factors strongly lymphopenia, levels. These findings may provide useful prognostic information decision-making regarding initiation hospitalized patients. Keywords: aging, enteral feeding, prognosis
