The relatives’ voice: how do relatives experience participation in reablement? A qualitative study

ABSTRACT
Background: Reablement is an early and time-limited home-based model of rehabilitation intervention with emphasis on intensive, goal-oriented, multidisciplinary assistance for persons experiencing functional decline. When in general takes place the person's own home, contrast to institution, relatives may have larger responsibilities helping supporting family member. Although there evidence, showing that caregivers, such as spouses children, experience burdens demanding situations related their caregiving role, are currently few publications exploring relatives' experiences participating reablement. The aim our study was explore describe how a community setting Norway experienced participation reablement process. Methods: Six participated semi-structured interviews. Qualitative systematic text condensation used analysis strategy. Results: Five themes emerged summarized reablement: 1) wish give receive information, be involved; 2) resource process; 3) conflicting expectations; 4) more free time themselves; 5) lack follow-up programs. Conclusion: Our findings highlight involvement collaborative process between health professionals, older adults, practical significance care services. To advance practices, municipal social services should consider establishing system or routine foster this collaboration Follow-up programs included.
