The Association Between Asthma and Narcolepsy: A Nationwide Case-Control Study in Taiwan

ABSTRACT
Asthma, which is caused by inflammation of the airways, affects sensitivity nerve endings. Narcolepsy a chronic sleep disorder that may be autoimmunity. Recent studies have reported positive association between narcolepsy and asthma. We aimed to examine asthma determine effects therapeutic corticosteroid or bronchodilator use.We conducted nationwide population-based, nested case-control study using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) 2000 2013. Subjects with (ICD-9-CM code 347) were enrolled, 1:3 estimated propensity score-matched controls based on sex, age, index year. The was assessed multiple logistic regression analyses. covariates included monthly insurance premiums, geographical area residence, urbanization level care, presence diseases related immune response central nervous system. use also analyzed.Overall, 2008 subjects identified from NHIRD (502 patients 1506 controls). participants had almost three times previous diagnosis than controls. Compared those without asthma, an adjusted odds ratio (OR) 3.181 for comorbidity (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.048-4.941, p<0.001). inhaled corticosteroids associated lower risk comorbidity, OR 0.465 CI, 0.250-0.634; p<0.001), in when compared treatment.This demonstrated significantly higher narcolepsy. patients, treatment.
