A Mini-Review of Curcumin Therapy in Pain Treatment

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Pain is a significant, multifactorial problem worldwide. Curcumin, derivative of the rhizome turmeric (Curcuma longa), has been historically used in Asian medicine due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Recent clinical trials have demonstrated potential effect. This mini-review aimed summarize effect curcumin literature. Methods: The Medline (PubMed) Cochrane Central Register Controlled Trials databases were searched for articles published until Sep 15th, 2022. Randomized controlled (RCT) on oral pain control five different categories (1) arthritis, (2) muscle soreness, (3) abdominal pain, (4) (5) other types included. risk bias was assessed using risk-of-bias tool randomized (RoB2) tool. Results: Nineteen full-text included study, eight studies described osteoarthritis (OA) knee. All them reported an knee OA reduction compared placebo or similar medicines. RoB assessment results with overall low high risk. Results regarding are inconclusive, two showing no curcumin. Discussion: Within limitations this mini-review, be effective agent treating mainly when manage OA-related pain. However, further impact curcumin, particularly categories, needed.
