ABSTRACT
Based on the RILEM Technical Committee 274-TCE work, this paper is a discussion of remaining engineering challenges faced by earthen architecture. The assessment earth material performances requires development appropriate procedures and standards. This discussed in particular for characterisation, hygrothermal behaviour, mechanical durability materials. One other important challenge, since one main advantages classically put forward, its ecological performance, proper life cycle materials, elements buildings. Moreover, develops why approach to construction must be different compared dominant preserve ability contribute transition sector. In particular, needs using local soils, with an architectural coping limits developing optimisation materials multifunctionality rather than selecting sole property maximised. Lastly, findings can used develop holistic foster new architecture projects.
