ABSTRACT
Corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete is a common degradation mechanism occurring infrastructures worldwide. Even though extensive research has been conducted over the last decades to accurately predict influence corrosion on durability, comprehensive understanding several micro-scale processes simultaneously involved still lacking. The application X-ray Computed Tomography (X-ray CT) can contribute elucidate these processes, since this technique allows observing internal status specimens non-destructively, time, and with spatial resolution range µm. Nevertheless, relatively low sensitivity light elements (e.g., hydrogen oxygen) CT may hinder observation solution within cementitious matrix. This consideration discussed letter. results study show that detection macropores air voids) through not limited by attenuation coefficient fluid per se, but more at which acquisitions are performed dimensions porous volume where penetrates. observations reported letter open opportunities further moisture conditions voids mechanisms reinforced materials corrosion, freeze-thaw damage), have rarely investigated according literature. findings could significantly deepen micro- scale affect durability need be elucidated, as present
