ABSTRACT
Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) uses mobile technology to enable in situ self-report data collection on behaviors and states. In a typical EMA study, participants are prompted several times day answer sets of multiple-choice questions. Although the repeated nature reduces recall bias, it may induce participation burden. There is need explore complementary approaches collecting that less burdensome yet provide comprehensive information an individual's A new approach, microinteraction (μEMA), restricts items single, cognitively simple questions answered smartwatch with single-tap assessments using quick, glanceable microinteraction. However, viability μEMA capture states large-scale longitudinal study has not been demonstrated. This paper describes protocol currently used Temporal Influences Movement & Exercise (TIME) Study conducted young adults, interface app gather responses smartwatch, qualitative feedback from after pilot app, changes made main TIME based feedback, preliminary results subset active Study. The involves 246 individuals; measurements include passive sensing smartphone intensive smartphone-based hourly EMA, 4-day bursts every 2 weeks. Every day, also nightly survey. On non-EMA burst days, assessing such as physical activity, sedentary behavior, affect. At end describe their experience semistructured interview. was test refine before study.Changes included adjusting single-question selection method vibrotactile prompting. We added sensor-triggered for activity behavior. As June 2021, total 81 had completed at least 6 months study. For 662,397 delivered, compliance rate 67.6% (SD 24.4%) completion 79% 22.2%).The provides opportunities novel approach temporally dense sustainable manner. Data suggest be valuable understanding individual level, thus possibly supporting future interventions require within-day, people go about lives.
